WHENEVER THERE ARE PEOPLE TO DANCE,

WHENEVER THERE ARE PEOPLE TO DANCE, UNTIL THAN WE'RE GONNA is a sci-fi, action-packed quest into Utopia. TERAZ POLIŻ and BLAUE FRAU takes the audience on a journey into an international, multilingual futuristic vision of an ideal world, where all our problems have been solved, where there is no inequality, violence or fear, where anything is possible, and dreaming is just planning ahead.
It’s an optimistic agenda for a peaceful revolution, perpetuated by the following questions: Is utopia a place, period or process? Is change possible? If something once unattainable was finally within our grasp, what would that make us? The production combines different traditions and languages (Polish, Swedish, English), bringing together the individual and the collective, the private and the societal. It’s like a children’s game, where the rules can change as unbridled imagination comes first. The title WHENEVER THERE ARE PEOPLE TO DANCE, UNTIL THAN WE'RE GONNA is practically untranslatable due to the intentional mistakes it contains, which befuddle its meaning. Such a title shouldn’t exist, just like utopia. And yet we try to chart this paradise, name it and strive to reach it - and these struggles outweigh the mistakes made along the way. In an ideal world there’s nothing wrong with making mistakes. We have grown accustomed to believe that society, teams or working groups should be “put in order” by forming a hierarchy of power, or at least by placing a role model or charismatic leader on a pedestal. We have grown accustomed to believe that the actors, directors and the audience have strictly defined roles in theatre and that is the only way to go. We have also grown accustomed to believe that without structure neither work nor decision-making is possible, and that sooner or later chaos would ensue and so a “captain” is indispensable. But what if another way is possible? The entire process of working on this production was our attempt to create a non-hierarchical model of dialogue - an attempt which proved successful. That is how this production came to be - free of power structures, top-down hierarchy, without a “captain of the ship”. |
