TERAZ POLIŻ created a series of three performative readings of GHF, short for GOD HONOUR AND THE FATHERLAND, to explore the household triad, which serves as a motto of Poland, adorning Polish military banners. In their readings the group attempted to redefine the Polish psyche and (re)construct Poles’ national identity through dialogue. A shared identity; individual; tamed; new; real. Each reading was held to coincide with a national holiday or anniversary linked to the theme of the performance. The reading of the first part, titled GOD, took place on 15 August, which marks the Catholic feast known as the Assumption of Mary (which coincides with the Polish Armed Forces Day in Poland). The second part, HONOUR, was staged on 1 September, the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. The final part, FATHERLAND, was read on 5 October, which marked 28 years since anti-communist icon Lech Wałęsa received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The scripts were based on excerpts from works by authors the likes of Leszek Kołakowski, Pär Lagerkvist, Salman Rushdie, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Herta Műller, Thomas Mann, Etgar Keret, J.M. Coetzee, Sándor Márai. The texts also feature passages of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” or Astrid Lindgren’s “Pippi Longstocking” alongside reportage by Jacek Hugo-Bader.

Each reading was followed by a discussion with the audience.
